Renowned for their superior ergonomics, crisp triggers, and overall performance, 1911s have a storied history dating back to the early 20th century. Over time, this classic design has evolved, leading to the development of the 2011—a modernized version featuring a double-stack magazine for increased capacity while maintaining the renowned shooting experience of a 1911.
Enter the Springfield Prodigy, a feature-rich yet affordable 2011 system
That combines Springfield's decades of expertise with cutting-edge advancements. Originally launched in 2022, the Prodigy debuted with two barrel and slide length options: 4.25 inches and 5 inches. The 4.25-inch model featured a full-length grip accommodating 17-, 20-, or 26-round magazines. However, due to magazine capacity restrictions in Illinois, compliant 10-round magazines were also made available. All Prodigy models, including the latest versions, come standard with a tritium fiber optic front sight for enhanced visibility.
In the summer of 2024, Springfield expanded the Prodigy lineup with the release of compensated versions in both compact and full-size configurations.
These models feature front slide cuts designed to vent gases upward, reducing muzzle rise for faster follow-up shots.
Now, Springfield has unveiled the Prodigy Compact series, offering two new barrel and slide lengths: 3.5 inches and 4.25 inches.
Unlike the original models, these compacts feature a reduced frame size while maintaining a standard 15-round magazine capacity. One of the most appealing aspects of the Prodigy lineup is its impressive set of features for the price. The compact models include ambidextrous safeties, a skeletonized hammer, a crisp 4-pound trigger, and an adaptive grip texture. They also come standard with tritium front sights and optics-ready slides for those who prefer to mount a red dot sight.
The Prodigy line bridges the gap between tradition and innovation, providing shooters with a modern, high-capacity platform built on the trusted 1911 foundation.
Each Prodigy Compact ships with a Springfield Armory soft case, two magazines, and an optics plate.
While the original Prodigy models were excellent for home defense, the new compact versions are ideal for concealed carry, making them a versatile choice for those who appreciate the classic 1911 feel with contemporary enhancements.
Springfield Armory proudly introduces the 1911 DS Prodigy Compact 9mm, available in 3.5-inch and 4.25-inch configurations. These double-stack pistols merge the time-tested 1911 platform with modern carry-focused refinements, delivering a 15-round capacity in a slim, ergonomic design.
Designed for concealed carry and self-defense, the Prodigy features a tritium front sight paired with a serrated black U-notch rear sight for superior low-light visibility.
The Agency Optic System (AOS) plates, machined from billet steel, ensure proper optic height and an intuitive sight picture. Each pistol ships with a HEX Dragonfly-compatible plate and a standard cover plate, with additional plates available through the Springfield Armory Store.
Weighing just 25.5 ounces (3.5-inch model) and 29 ounces (4.25-inch model), the Prodigy Compact pairs a 7075-T6 aluminum frame with a lightweight polymer grip module. Built for durability, its slide is forged from carbon steel, while the match-grade bull barrel is crafted from stainless steel with a black DLC finish.
With its blend of classic 1911 heritage and modern enhancements, the Springfield Prodigy Compact delivers a top-tier shooting experience tailored for today’s discerning shooters.
